In 2007 Newropeans are aiming to organise 500 public meetings throughout Europe with the theme: “The new Europeans generation and the EU’s future”. For more information on this movement, their aim and the Newropeans Marathon Session 2007, check the website: http://www.newropeans.eu.
In February and March 2007 the National Consultations of the European Citizens’ Consultations (ECC) will take place. Citizens from the 27 member countries will have the opportunity to debate the future of the European Union with each other. The outcome of the National Consultations will be discussed and merged into a single document at the Final Consultation in Brussels in May 2007. In June 2007 this final report, including conclusions and recommendations, will be presented to the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council.
While the political leaders of the European Union will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in Berlin on 25 March 2007, the Conference on the Future of Europe (‘Europe: Not without the people!’) will be held in the same city as well. However, at this conference the past will not be celebrated, but current problems the EU is facing will be discussed. Some of these issues include: How to create a democratic Europe of the citizens? How can we achieve and safeguard real subsidiarity, democratic control, transparency and direct citizen participation?

'Citizenship education can and must make a significant contribution by transcending national borders and seeking cooperation on a European and international level. We hope to contribute to a more informed debate on basic concepts as citizenship, social inclusion and pluralism and tolerance. So the presentation and exchange of best practices in citizenship education in immigration societies will be a defining feature of the conference', as quoted on the website of the Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung.
