Europe for Citizens Forum/Brussels 28/29 September 2006

This Forum is organised by the European Commission. It will bring together a diversity of representatives of municipalities (mayors) and of civil society organisations which are taking part or are interested in the Community Action Programme to promote Active European Citizenship.

Representatives of the EU Presidency, of the European Parliament, of the Committee of the Regions and of the European Social and Economic Committee are invited as speakers. Other speakers will include key stakeholders as well as field experts from the projects.

The Programme

The first day will focus on the lessons learnt from town-twinning activities in the perspective of active European citizenship and on the contribution of local authorities and their partners to Plan D, for Democracy, Dialogue and Debate. The day will be concluded by the Golden Stars ceremony during which the Commission will reward outstanding projects of active European citizenship. The winning projects will present their project in an exhibition held during the two days of the Forum. Each winner will be accompanied by a journalist from their country. The second day will focus on the future “Europe for Citizens” programme and its implementation.

New opportunities

The Forum will provide the participants with an extraordinary occasion to exchange experiences and to learn about new opportunities, methods and actors, and possibly identify future partners, with a view to foster active European citizenship.

For the Politeia network especially the second day of the conference might be of interest, when the European Commission presents the “Europe for Citizens Programme” (2007-2013). One of the Politiea partners, the Dutch Centre for Political Participation will be represented at the conference.
